+
+ vv 12-21 are written as if in the context of giving a history with a focus on the effect and role of the law of Moses. Verses 13 and 20 then show that the law led to Jews becoming transgressors in order that Christ might be sent to redeem Israel from her transgressions. The approach or style of this historical narrative appears to be one toward a non-Jewish audience. If the audience had been Jewish, for example, this portion of chapter 5 would say that "Moses was sent to you with the law." Maybe if the audience were a mix of Jew and gentile, then Paul may write in the generalized sense as done in vv. 12-21.

Tobin, SJ
+ The book has a section titled Literary Cues in Romans pg 84.
+ Literary cues in Romans provide guidance for understanding its structure. AS ementioned earlier, when one reas the main body of Romans (1:16-11:36) , one cannot but be struck by the differences in style between different sections of the text. ON the one hand, some sections read like expositions or dexplanations of a topic. Their tone is calm and note explicilty argmentative. Romans 1:18--32, 3:21-26, 5:1-21, and 8:1-30 are of this sort. On the other hand, other sections of Romans are quite argumentative or polemical in style. Romans 2:1-3:20,m 3:27-4:25, 6:1-7:25, and 8:31-11:36 are of this sort; these sections are marked by various literary devices that create a much livelier, more engaged , and argumentative tone.15
+ Note 15 For explanations of many of these terms, see R. Dean Anderson, Jr., Glossary of Greek Rhetorical Terms Connected to Methods of Argumentation, Figures, and Tropes from Anaximenes to Quintilian (Louvain: πeeters, 2000); and Heinrich Lausberg, handbook of Literary Rhetoric: A Foundation for Literary Study(ed.
